During the second round of the Defender Trophy, our team had the responsibility of overseeing safety and risk management across a demanding, real-world adventure environment.

Events like this are a reminder that true adventure isn’t about removing risk, it’s about understanding it, planning for it, and managing it well so people can perform at their best.

From dynamic terrain and changing weather to human factors under pressure, our role was to enable the experience to unfold safely, smoothly and professionally.

The Earth Scouts Africa team making it happen for the Defender Trophy Trials in South Africa for the past few weeks. Finding the balance between safety, risk and authentic adventure.

Who remembers the old Camel Trophy?

To be a Camel man (woman) epitomised the outdoor/adventure/gritty type person. Well, that same spirit is alive and roaring in South Africa, but this time it’s an all new event, the Defender Trophy.

Our team were deep in the engine room for the first two sessions of the South African selections, responsible for safety for both competitors and crew. The elements threw everything at them for the first round. Raging storms with hail, insane lightning and flood like rain. Perfectly wild!

Forty-eight participants pushed through two intense trial rounds. Only twelve will advance to the finals in February 2026 and two from that one will go to the big international event.

The events covered a range of activities from technical 4×4 challenges to wild, demanding adventure tasks.

The Defender Trophy isn’t just a competition, it’s a purpose driven event reminding us all about the importance of having and adventurous mindset.
